1The worlds great rainforests are all near the equator ,in south-east Asia,Africa and South America.These are huge areas of thick forest with very tall trees,where it rains almost every day.,

2.They are home to millions of kinds of exotic animals,birds,reptiles and insects ,strange plants and beatiful flowers.Three quarters of the worlds species live in rainforests .If we destroy their habitat many of them will not survive.

.The rainforests are important in other ways,too.They help to reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere,and affect the weather around the world.Without rainforests,our whole planet might not survive!

4.We know this-but we continue to destroy 30,000 hectares of rainforest every single day.Logging companies cut down trees to sell the wood,farmers clear the land to grow crops ,and we build towns and roads where the forest used to be.

5.The biggest and most important of these forests is the Amazon rainforest in South America.Exerts say that there are rare animal species in the forest which we have never seen.They also believe that plants from the forest could give us many important new medicines,such as cures for cancer and Aids.

6.The Amazon rainforest is disappearing very quickly,though.Experts are afraid that many wonderful plant and animal species will become etinct before we have a chance to discover them.
