Statistics Assignment Task 2
Tensile tests were carried out on two materials to determine their suitability for use in aircraft wing structure. One hundered tests were carried out on each material to facilitate a statistical evaluation of the materials yield strength performance. The test data is shown on the 'Test Data' tab of this worksheet.
The 0.2% proof stress of materials 'A' and 'B' are shown on the 'Test Data' worksheet.
Use your statistical analyisis knowledge and skills to determine which material you would recommend if the minimum allowable design stress was 360 MPa.
You should calculate standard statistical terms that must include the mean and the standard deviation. You should produce a graphical representation of the test data to provide a visual representation for comparison of the two materials.

Please look at the included "stats.xls".
I calculated means of columns B and C and their standard deviations.
(they are shown on the histogram in the Excel file).
But what is really important - is the "mean - 3 * sigma" calculations
in cells H5 and H6.
It shows that however the first material (listed in column B) has
only 473 as mean, but its stddev is smaller, and we have 99,9% probability
that the lowest values are bigger than the limit "360".
That 99,9% is because of the 3-sigma rule for a normal distribution,
which states that 99,9% of results "sits" inside an interval of plus/minus 3 * stddev from the mean.
Of course the lower value - "mean minus 3 * sigma" is important here.
The material listed in column C is NOT recomended because of higher stdev.
I calculated t-tests too, but they are rather unimportant, comparing to the above.
Forget about these tests :)
