Part 1
A lighting support is made from a turned rod as shown in the figure attached. When loaded it carries a load of 12 kN. Under these conditions, calculate:
a) the stress in each section of the support
b) the amount the support streaches under this load.
Take the tensile modulus of the material as 210 GPa
Part 2
A support column 3,5m long and supporting a load of 24 kN, is made from S.H.S. 50 mm x 50 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm filled with concrete to produce a composite structure. If the value of E for the steel is 200 Gpa and the value of E for the concrete is 10 Gpa, determine:
a) the stress in both materials
b) the amount the support column will reduce under the applied load.
