The British Museum jest największym muzeum historii
starożytnej w Europie, posiada siedem milionów eksponatów, przedstawiających niezwykle bogatą historię Londynu, Wielkiej Brytanii, Europy i wreszcie świata. Są to przede wszystkim mumie, wazy, dzieła literatury oraz rzeźby.
Obiekt został otwarty dla odwiedzających 15 Stycznia 1759 roku. Jego założycielem jest Sir Hans Sloan.
Ogromny gmach muzeum zajmuje 75 000 metrów kwadratowych (to 4 rzymskie kolosea lub 9 boisk piłkarskich). Rocznie przewija się tędy ponad 5 milionów zwiedzających.
Obecnie najbardziej rozpoznawalną częścią British Museum jest największy w świecie zadaszony dziedziniec. Autorem wartego 100 milionów funtów projektu jest światowej klasy architekt Norman Foster. Uroczyste otwarcie z udziałem Elżbiety II miało miejsce w grudniu 2000 roku.
