RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE

The original story of Tarzan was written in 1912 by the American author Edgar Rice Burroughs. He wrote about an English ariostocrat called Lord Greystoke who was left in Africa as a baby. He was then raised by a family of apes and learnt the language and habits of animals. Tarzan was first published in 1914 and Burroughs went on to write 25 more books about the jungle hero. Today, his works have sold over 36 million copies and have been translated into over 30 languages.

The Tarzan character has been immortalised in movies, on TV, in a comic strip and even in a radio serial. There have been 47 movie adaptations of Tarzan - only Dracula has inspired more films! People can't get enough of the idea of a noble savage who learns the secrets of the jungle. And as Disney's movie shows, there's still a lot of life in this old tale.

When Disney started work on Tarzan, the directors and the team of artistic supervisors went on an African safari in March 1996. They toured animal reserves in Kenya, visited the mountain gorillas in Uganda, and saw the Sweetwater Chimp Sanctuary. The teams then got to work in both Paris and California. Daily video-conferencing meant that the two studios, thousands of miles apart, could even work on the same frame at the same time. In this way Disney's Tarzan combines a tale of adventure inspired by nature with the latest technology.
