W starożytności używano słoni bojowych do walk i do transportu.Słoń potrafi przez wiele godzin iść spokojnie z jednakową prędkością do 8 km\h. Przez długi czas potrafi też iść szybkim marszem z prędkością ok. 15km\h , a w walce może szarżować z prędkością ok.35km\h. Jeżeli słoń przez 5minut pokonał trasę długości 600m,poruszając sie ze stałą prędkością.
